"Miami has fair weather fans; Tampa has apathetic fans; Jacksonville has fans?"

1) Florida doesn't have the sports legacies of the Northeast. I have a friend from Boston who raves about the number of Celtics Championships compared to that of my beloved Heat. Well yeah, your team is 42 years older. Basic math says you will have more championships. And that pales in comparison to the Red Sox being over a hundred years old, while the Rays are FIFTEEN. In the Northeast you have generations of life long fans; whereas if you can buy tickets to a Rays game, you are older than them.
2) By referencing a friend from Boston, I bring in another large factor impacting Florida sports - Transplants. It is not uncommon for a Boston or New York team to be playing in Florida and have more fans in attendance than the home team. For example New York Fan relocates to Florida, continues to cheer his childhood team, passes on that fandom to their kids - who were born and raised in Florida. So the potential fan base shrinks even more. What is really sad is how this mentality even carries over to college sports - how often have you seen a student of USF or UCF wearing UF apparel on campus, or cheer harder for a school they didn't get in to than the school they currently attend?
3) Distance. The Northeast has older cities that are packed on top of each other to cram in as many people and buildings as possible; Florida doesn't have that issue - why do you think Disney decided to build a theme park in the middle of a swamp? It takes a lot of time to get to Florida stadiums and arenas, and you have to drive to them - an issue the Northeast really doesn't have to experience.

Let's take crossing a bridge as the variable: Coming from Cambridge, MA to Fenway Park is a distance of THREE miles. Most fans walk or take public transit from their home to a game. Coming from Tampa, FL to Tropicana Field is at average TWENTY THREE miles. Granted there is public transit - if you have over an hour and a half to spend and things are running on time.

So yes, Bob Ryan, we in Florida are not as privileged with supporting a 112 year old team who your family has supported for 4 generations and you can walk to see the games. But we do our best with what we have. Moreover, you can't say shit about dedication if you never went to a Florida Marlins afternoon game in July at Joe Robbie Stadium and left 10 pounds lighter than you entered.

Re: 9 Embarrassing Music Acts From Florida

Damn. Harsh words. I live in Ft Lauderdale and while I agree with everything written above (sans Manson, he was fun to have around when his ego level was zero) there are some great bands like Charlie Pickett, and Harry Pussy. You can't rag on Charlie Pickett....

Re: Something Looms

aw yeahhh

Re: Something Looms

test

Re: LISTEN: Best Florida Music from 2012

Roadkill Ghost Choir? Their debut is on Tiny Engines.)
